One Flower Wednesday Mug Rug

I'm a little late to the mug rug craze, but since today is One Flower Wednesday over at Karen's blog, Journey of a Quilter, I decided to use my flower on a mug rug.  And, since I've been making string blocks and can't seem to get enough of them, I decided to combine the two.  I finally cut into my Fresh Flowers fat quarter stack that you saw a couple of posts ago.  I really love these fabrics.
You may think this is a bit over the top, but I was in the mood to hand quilt something.  I have a lot of quilt tops.  OK, let's be honest; I have a clothes basket heaped full of unquilted tops.  I didn't have anything basted, so I hand quilted this little mug rug.  It has been a long time since I have hand quilted anything, and it was really enjoyable.
These are my two thimbles of choice.  The thimble on the left is my Thimblelady Thimble by Liuxin Newman.  The thimble on the right is my Tommie Lane Thimble.  This one is special because Tommie herself fit this thimble on me at the NQA Quilt Show over in Columbus, Ohio, several years ago.  I really can't decide which one I prefer.  I think the Thimblelady thimble is more comfortable, but I like the way both of them stitch....so I just switch from one to the other.
I hope all of you are finding some time to do some stitching today!!!!!

  4. I like your hexies a lot. I don't think it's over the top to hand quilt it. I think it would be great practice. I don't really hand quilt, but I'd like to....I'm a wannabe. I have that Australian gal's hand quilting kit and some of her plastic thimbles like your first one. I am anxious to give her method a go, but I have such little time. Do you use her method? If so, I'm curious how you like it. I have always wanted a Tommie thimble, too. That would be very cool. You lucky girl.

  16. What a Sweet mug rug! I hope no one bumps your cappuccino over, lol (it would be tea in mine) Really, I love the bright, happy colors and the hexie flower. I may try this one, Luann!

I think those thimbles are wonderful. How cool is that, to have a metal one personally fitted to your own finger?

  17. I'm still trying to figure out the mug rug phenomenon. Seems like a perfect way to showcase a little block and some hand stitching though. You did such a beautiful job. I love hexagons.
