Super Bowl Food

Since today is Super Bowl Sunday, I usually fix food that we can eat while we watch the game and everything leading up to it.  This probably ranks right up there in the top 3 "food days" of the year.  I made a big vat of chili yesterday because we all agree that chili is much better after it has had a chance to sit overnight in the refrigerator.  And, I do mean that I made a vat.  It wouldn't all fit in my big crock pot or dutch oven, so I ended up having to cook it in my big turkey roaster.  I'll freeze part of it for another day, but for today I put enough in the crock pot to fit and set it on warm.

Meanwhile......while I was searching my recipe box to make sure I had all of the chili ingredients on hand, I found an old recipe for Cream Puffs that my mother-in-law used to make.  So I decided I would make some.

These are easy...trust me.  They look much more complicated than they really are.  Here are the 4 ingredients:
1 cup water, 1 cup flour, 1/2 cup of butter (or margarine), 4 eggs

Bring 1 cup water and 1/2 cup of butter (or margarine) to a boil.  Turn burner to low and add 1 cup of flour.  Still until dough forms a ball.

Remove from heat and beat in 4 eggs all at one time. Continue beating until dough becomes smooth.  Drop dough by scant 1/4 cupfuls 3 inches apart onto an ungreased cookie sheet.  (Makes 12)
Bake 35 minutes at 400.

After the cream puffs are cool, cut off the tops, fill as desired, and dust with powdered sugar.  I use a serrated edged knife.  I was going to fill them with just this Cool Whip Frosting, but someone had taken a big scoop out of the container.  So I mixed up a box of vanilla instant pudding with 1 1/4 cups of milk and then stirred the rest of the Cool Whip Frosting in.  The original filling recipe is 1 envelope of Dream Whip, 1 box instant vanilla pudding, 1 1/2 cups milk.

Here is what they look like.

Hope you'll give these a try.

Oh, here is the chili.  I don't really follow a recipe.  Lots of meat, onion, tomato juice, both light and dark kidney beans.  Spices are to taste.  This time I found some Mrs. Dash Southwest Chipotle seasoning that I added along with the chili powder, salt, pepper, and red pepper flakes.

Here is the heart table mat that the cream puffs are sitting on.  You can find my tutorial for it in my post titled Heart Strings Table Mat Alternative here.  This is the pattern I created for those of you that don't like to make string blocks.

You can find my pattern for the Heart Strings Tutorial can be found here.  There is more about it here.

I hope you have had a relaxing Sunday.

Thanks for stopping by for a visit!

  3. Oooh, a yummy feast. I haven't had homemade cream puffs in decades except for a rare one from Italian NYC bakeries a long time ago as well. I could eat every one on that plate, I think! Pastries are so wonderful.
We didn't have special Super Bowl food but found lots to nibble on. I wasn't that tuned into the game but I sat by hubby and knitted as he enjoyed it.

  8. Wow, thanks for the cream puff recipe. I used to make something like this back in the early 60's but lost my recipe and instructions. This same cooked batter can make popovers, too, right? Memory fails. lol.
Lovely string heart table topper. Love it!

  10. Hi LuAnn, Your puffs look great, would love to try them. One question - is the flour plain or self raising.

  11. Yummy, yummy in the tummy! I'm going to have to try those...all of them! I like your little heart mat too. I'll have to try that too but it will be after Valentine's Day. I'm feverishly trying to finish a birthday quilt and I'm almost there. Too much to do and not enough time! Thanks for the wonderful recipe. I definitley want to make those puffs. My favorite recipe as a little girl was my sister's cream puffs. I'll make these and share them with her...

  12. Love your header of pretty projects! Those cream puffs remind me of my Mom. I remember her making those when I was little - we always got chocolate pudding put in ours. Yummy. Thanks for the good memory.
