Are you doing the 2013 Quiltville mystery?

Are you planning to do the Bonnie Hunter Celtic Solstice mystery quilt for 2013?  She has posted fabric requirements and paint chip colors on her blog here so that you can start collecting and planning.  The mystery starts the Friday after Thanksgiving, and this year she is offering the quilt in two different sizes (111" X 111" and 75" X 75").  I know it's a busy time, but you can save the clues and work on your quilt through the winter months.

Here are the fabrics I've collected so far.  I've done some mystery quilts that just haven't worked out, but you can't go wrong with Bonnie's mysteries.  I didn't know there was such a thing until two friends told me about it 3 years ago at the Dear Jane retreat, and I've done them all since then.

Here is my Roll Roll Cotton Boll quilt.  This was the 2010 Quiltville mystery.

I just finished putting the borders on my 2011 mystery quilt, Orca Bay, and it's ready to go to the quilters.

I am working on putting my Easy Street blocks together now (2012).  I know a lot of people are hesitant to do any mystery quilt.  My Easy Street pieces have been in a box since early last year, and even after all this time they still fit together just as if I'd pieced them last week.  Bonnie's directions are always clear so there is no problem picking up where you left off.

Let me know if you are planning to do the mystery and whether or not you are using Bonnie's colors or going in a different direction.

Speaking of the Dear Jane retreat, I'll be there in Shipshewana next week.  I'm hoping to see/meet some of you there.

Hope you are finding some time to stitch today!

Thanks for visiting!

  1. I am -- and I may regret it. I do not always love them when they are done -- but I DO love using my scraps. My palette is much more scrappy than yours -- and will be using red instead of orange since I don't use a lot of orange. I've been trying to build my stash but don't want to buy fabric for this one. I think I got burned out on Cotton Boll when one clue was to make 600 HST while I was trying to get the house ready to move. I skipped last year -- and was glad. But happy to try this year. Will be looking forward to your progress!

  2. Oh yes! Easy Street was my first and I so enjoyed it. I am going in a totally different direction with the colors. Dusty Aqua, Dusty Rust, dark taupe, medium taupe and a soft cream. Your fabrics look great!

  3. Easy street was my first Bonnie mystery and I loved it. It was a great one for using fabric id had for along time, nearly 15 years in some instances. I'll be doing the one this year but I'm torn between using repros of which I have enough or using my old fabrics and having to add to them to get enough scrappiness. Time will tell. We will have fun whatever we choose.

  4. I am joining in too and I will be using Bonnie's suggested colour palette although I didn't get the paint chips. I will improvise and use the fabrics I already have in my stash. I expect mine will be very scrappy!

  5. I've done all 3 of the same ones. All of mine are still flimsies, none are quilted yet. I have my paint chips but haven't started collecting yet. The colors are a little intense for me, i may use the softer colors. Have fun at the retreat.

  6. I'm using Bonnie's color pallette, mainly because I have it in my stash, even the red-orange. Except the green, which I bought on sale at the LQS today! We're hosting the family for the holidays, so I won't be able to get much done, if anything, done the last half of December. Love using my scraps!

  7. I did Easy Street and gave it to my brother. He loves it. I'll be doing her new Mystery Quilt. Wow. LOVE the colors she suggests and will go with them. Some fabrics will come from my stash and scraps and I've bought some fabric, too. I'll make it scrappy as possible. Thought I've chosen to make the 75"x 75" size, I'll try to figure out a way to make it longer after the "big reveal". This is going to be fun.

  8. I'm not "planning" to do the mystery this time. I never start them until after the reveal anyway, so that could change by the new year--we'll see. There is no way I could do it during the holidays.
Easy Street is still only about half made, and Orca Bay still needs borders. I really shouldn't start another. : )
    Your RRCB is wonderful!!

  9. I did Orca Bay in a smaller size . Was good to use up my fabrics but a lot of work. I am thinking of doing the new mystery to use up my scraps again..

  13. Are you talking about Shipshewana, IN?

I have been trying to find out if they were in the track of the tornados from this weekend but I haven't been able to get any definite word.

DH & I are members of the Coachman Owner's Association (RVing group) and I know that the Director lives in Shipshewana. . .have reached out to see if he & his family are ok but haven't been able to get any info through Facebook.

I'm not sure if I will be doing the new Mystery. . . may just print out the directions and file it for a future project.

  14. Celtic Solstice is on my agenda. The colors will be slightly different. Also, thinking about taking all of the directions and making a miniature quilt.
    See you in Shipshie Friday!

  16. Hi Luann. I've started on the mystery quilt using similar colors but a bit more repro than bright so that means adding in indigos, greens, cheddars , creams/tans. I was thinking of using double pinks instead of yellows My goal is to use only what's in my stash so it will likely be very scrappy. I particularly liked Bonnie's pictures of her piles for each color and I'd say mine resemble hers. I haven't had much time to work on it yet but I do hope to see it through.
