Temecula Quilt Company Sew Along Blocks

The Temecula Quilt Company just completed a sew along to celebrate Judie Rothermel's 25th year designing fabric for Marcus Brothers.  And, you all know that there is a pretty good chance that you have a piece or two of this fabric in your stash or you've used it in your quilts.

I decided to join in this sew along, and these are my blocks.

The quilt along quilt is finished and posted here on the Temecula blog.  They have set their blocks like I have done in the photo above.  We made 5 of each block, and they set their quilt with all of the same block in each row. They used the same fabric in between each row of the same block, but each row is separated by a different sashing fabric.  I'm not sure what I'll do there, but you can see some of the fabrics I've thought about using.

Then I decided to shift each row of blocks so that they would be mixed up, and I think I like that better.  Any thoughts?

The sew along started on January 25 with a set of blocks posted each Friday.  The block patterns are still posted there if you want to join in.  The blocks are 5 inches finished.

I'm linking up with Judy L. at Patchwork Times today for Design Wall Monday.

Abundance Quilt Finish

I have really enjoyed working on this little Abundance quilt from Lori's sew along.  I especially enjoyed hand quilting it.  I just finished sewing the binding down this morning.  Thanks for the sew along Lori.

We had a freezing rain/ice storm overnight last night, and there is still about a quarter of an inch of ice on the driveway.  So until it melts..........

How to Make A Hanging Sleeve

This is a tutorial for the hanging sleeve that I put on the back of the Charming Christmas Present Wall Hanging that I showed you in this post.  Since it is getting close to time for quilt shows here, I thought I would share with you how I make a hanging sleeve.

Cut the sleeve fabric 9 inches wide by the width of the quilt.

Turn the short edges of the sleeve under a quarter inch and press.

Then turn under another quarter inch and top stitch.

With the wrong sides together sew 1/2" seam.  Press the seam open.  Notice how the seam is pressed in the center of the piece.  This will go next to the quilt and will be hidden.

Center the seam as shown in the photo above, and press.  Turn the sleeve over.  Now press a half inch fold upward in the bottom of the sleeve.

Pin the sleeve along the top edge of the quilt about a half inch down from the top and hand sew along the long edge.

Then sew the short end of the edge of the sleeve to the quilt as shown below; then sew the bottom of the edge to the quilt where you see the needle inserted as shown in the photo below (where you pressed the fold in the sleeve.  This leaves a gap in the sleeve so that the hanging rod can be inserted easily.  Continue sewing along the bottom edge and finish by sewing the other short edge of the sleeve.

Insert rod and your quilt is ready for display.

I'll put a link to this tutorial in my sidebar.

Scandinavian Hearts in Quiltmania

I use my Scandinavian Christmas Hearts Table cover at Christmas and at Valentine's, too.  I purposely used red and white fabrics that weren't Christmas fabrics so I could use it for both.

I love the red and white.

The first thing I did when making this was to start doing the red work hearts.  The hearts were supposed to be set on point, and I mistakenly embroidered the first heart as a square block.

So I made this little  table mat from my mistake block.

I found this Quiltmania magazine at Barnes and Noble a couple of weeks ago, and was surprised to find this pattern in the magazine.

Here is the pattern complete with all the red work designs by Wenche Wolff  Hatling for Northern Quilts.

The magazine also has this pattern by Petra Prins.  I love this medallion quilt.

There also is this beautiful red and white applique' by Gerri Robinson.

And this Wool Tulip Crossing pattern by Lisa Bongean of Primitive Gatherings.  If you are not into wool, this pattern could just as easily be made with cotton fabrics.

Happy Valentine's Day!

Abundance Quilt Progress

I've been hand quilting on my Abundance quilt the last few evenings.  This is a 12" doll quilt that I made from a quilt along with Lori over at Humble Quilts.  My colors are different from Lori's, but I  wanted to use some of my pink and brown fabrics.  I'm about half done with the hand quilting.  I'm not great at it, but I really enjoy it.  This is the binding that I've temporarily cut.  I may change my mind about it after I'm finished quilting, but for right now this is what I've chosen.  Any suggestions?

This was a fun quilt along made from my stash, and I'm linking up over at Lori's blog.

Super Bowl Food

Since today is Super Bowl Sunday, I usually fix food that we can eat while we watch the game and everything leading up to it.  This probably ranks right up there in the top 3 "food days" of the year.  I made a big vat of chili yesterday because we all agree that chili is much better after it has had a chance to sit overnight in the refrigerator.  And, I do mean that I made a vat.  It wouldn't all fit in my big crock pot or dutch oven, so I ended up having to cook it in my big turkey roaster.  I'll freeze part of it for another day, but for today I put enough in the crock pot to fit and set it on warm.

Meanwhile......while I was searching my recipe box to make sure I had all of the chili ingredients on hand, I found an old recipe for Cream Puffs that my mother-in-law used to make.  So I decided I would make some.

These are easy...trust me.  They look much more complicated than they really are.  Here are the 4 ingredients:
1 cup water, 1 cup flour, 1/2 cup of butter (or margarine), 4 eggs

Bring 1 cup water and 1/2 cup of butter (or margarine) to a boil.  Turn burner to low and add 1 cup of flour.  Still until dough forms a ball.

Remove from heat and beat in 4 eggs all at one time. Continue beating until dough becomes smooth.  Drop dough by scant 1/4 cupfuls 3 inches apart onto an ungreased cookie sheet.  (Makes 12)
Bake 35 minutes at 400.

After the cream puffs are cool, cut off the tops, fill as desired, and dust with powdered sugar.  I use a serrated edged knife.  I was going to fill them with just this Cool Whip Frosting, but someone had taken a big scoop out of the container.  So I mixed up a box of vanilla instant pudding with 1 1/4 cups of milk and then stirred the rest of the Cool Whip Frosting in.  The original filling recipe is 1 envelope of Dream Whip, 1 box instant vanilla pudding, 1 1/2 cups milk.

Here is what they look like.

Hope you'll give these a try.

Oh, here is the chili.  I don't really follow a recipe.  Lots of meat, onion, tomato juice, both light and dark kidney beans.  Spices are to taste.  This time I found some Mrs. Dash Southwest Chipotle seasoning that I added along with the chili powder, salt, pepper, and red pepper flakes.

Here is the heart table mat that the cream puffs are sitting on.  You can find my tutorial for it in my post titled Heart Strings Table Mat Alternative here.  This is the pattern I created for those of you that don't like to make string blocks.

You can find my pattern for the Heart Strings Tutorial can be found here.  There is more about it here.

I hope you have had a relaxing Sunday.
