Veteran's Day Parade

I have a habit of getting a blog post ready and then it never sees the light of day.  I know Veterans Day was awhile ago, but I want to post this because I had more fun marching in this parade than I can possibly tell you.

On Veteran's Day I marched in the annual parade along with the Caroline Scott Harrison Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.  Our Chapter had 500 American flags to pass out to Veterans and children along the parade route.  That's me second from the right with my hands full of flags.

We arrived downtown early so had time to visit the World War II Memorial.

Arriving early, we were able to wander through the crowds and talk to a lot of the Veterans and hear their stories.  There were several floats in the parade.  These people made this float in honor of two of their brothers that had fought in Viet Nam.

This float is to honor Pearl Harbor Survivors.

Here is a Veteran in one of the track chairs that you hear so much about.  The National Guard was on hand to direct traffic and to answer questions.

For awhile it looked like we were going to march behind these 4 huge horses.....

But the Honor Guard stepped in to save the day.

I don't have a photo, but the National Guard Marching Band fell in line behind the Honor Guard, so we had some good marching music on the route.

Here is the Broad Ripple High School Marching Band ready to step off.

At times, it was organized chaos, but it was a very heart warming day.  I can't wait to do it again next year.

Thanksgiving Cooking

I've just finished putting together one of my Thanksgiving favorites:  Apples, Cranberries and Yams.  Several of my dishes are already assembled and will go into the oven tomorrow morning for our afternoon Thanksgiving get together with family and friends.

There are a lot of versions of this recipe, but I omit the nutmeg, leave the peeling on my apples, and add extra cranberries.  Here is the recipe:

1 can Yams
3 apples chopped (the recipe says peeled, but I didn't peel mine)
1 cup fresh cranberries
1/8 cup granulated sugar
1/4 cup brown sugar
1/2 stick butter
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

Toss sugars, spices and apples.  Spray a casserole dish with Pam.  Layer 1/2 the yams in a casserole dish followed by half of the apple mixture and half of the cranberries.  Cut half of the butter in slices and layer on top.  Repeat.

At this point I covered the dish with foil and put it in the refrigerator to bake tomorrow.  Bake at 350 for about an hour.  You can also top with pecans.   To fill a 13 X 9 baking dish, double the recipe.

I've been to Shipshewana and have to sort through my photos before I post.

Happy Thanksgiving to all of my readers.

Thank you for being here and visiting my blog.

English Paper Piecing Addiction Group

Here are some photos from the November meeting of the English Paper Piecing Addiction Group that meets at Back Door Quilts in Greenwood Indiana.

This was part of my show and tell...one of the blocks from my Road 66 quilt from the book Primarily Quilts by Di Ford.

This is one of Michelle's two inch 6 pointed stars.  I'm getting ready to head up to Shipshewana for a quilt retreat tomorrow afternoon.  I'll be bringing my stars along to work on.

Here is another one of Michelle's stars.  She had a notebook full.  They are each like looking at a little quilt.

Here is one of her quilts that she machine quilted.

And another....

Here is Barb with one of her blocks from a Sue Daley quilt.

Barb also does gorgeous wool applique.

Here is a table runner done in hexagons and small pinwheel blocks done in blues.

Here is another done with a multi colored batik border.  The hexagons and pinwheels pull all the colors together.  These would make great gifts!

Here is a better look at the table decorations  This was made doing English Paper Piecing (of course).  I believe the shape is a kite, and I would guess it is 2 inches.

Linda and Terri always have a lot of great show and tell.

I love every one of these little quilts.

This one has a beautiful paisley border with fussy cut sashing.

Here is the same quilt with different fabrics.

I think this is one of their customer's quilts waiting to be machine quilted.  Those logs were really tiny.

I love this one.   The nine patches alternate with the dark fabric in the 5s position and the light fabric in the 5s position.  The stem on the applique is bias made from cotton, but the flowers and leaves were wool applique.

This is going to be a Christmas wreath.  The hexagons are 1/2".

Here is another project from a group member.

There is always lots of inspiration taken from this group.  I always come home with lots of ideas.

Hope you are finding some time to stitch today.

Thanks for stopping by for a visit.
