Scrap Quilt and Granny Square Afghan

I've been working on these two projects, and like the title of my blog says there are lots of loose threads to be sewn before I finish.

 

I have a few blocks of this quilt sewn together.  The pattern for the quilt is in Edyta Sitar's book Friendship Strips & Scraps available at

I'm glad that I took photos of these blocks because I can see a couple of places where I have two of the same fabric sewn together.

I trim each block to 3 1/2 inches to finish at 3 inches.  There are 624 blocks total in the quilt.

I don't usually do a "random scrappy" quilt.  I normally choose a few colors and then use scraps in those colors.  This one is going to be truly random from my scraps.

This crocheted granny square afghan is what I work on in the evenings.  I have tried to choose colors that are used in Cath Kidston fabrics and accessories.

I have four rows put together so far.  This afghan will be 9 squares by 12 squares...so 108 squares total.

This is what I have left to sew together.  Each time you use a color in a granny square there are 2 loose ends to be sewn in.  I have used 6 colors in each square so there are 12 ends to be sewn in.  In all 108 squares there will be 1,296 threads to weave in, and that doesn't include the yarn that is used to sew the squares and rows together.

I hope to be able to show you one or maybe both of these projects finished soon.

Phebe Stars and Fabric Search

I am still working on my Phebe quilt along with a scrap project and a lot of crochet.  I've started working on the stars that are in the outside part of the quilt.



I think there are 134 total stars in the quilt so I only have 130 left to make.  The stars finish at 4 inches.

The original quilt uses only four colors- reds (including pinks), teal blues, golds, and tans/browns.  The only green on the quilt is in the vines and leaves.

My friend Pam has converted me to a "kit maker".  I have bought a box of snack sized baggies and am starting to cut and put together kits for each star so that whenever I get a chance to sew all I have to do is choose a bag with all of my pieces cut and sew them. 




I am looking for some of the original fabrics from the quilt.  These two are from Marcus Rocky Mountain Quilt Museum III collection.

Here it is in both colorways.



This photo is from the original quilt picture included in my pattern.  I would really like to find some of the this hill fabric.   It is from the Moda Chelsea Boutique line.

New Brigitte Giblin Book

There hasn't been a lot of sewing going on here this week.  I've mostly been crocheting, doing some chores here in the house, and playing in my flowers outside.  I ordered the new Brigitte Giblin book, Feathering the Nest with Vintage Inspired Quilts, from Quiltmania, and it arrived this week.


This quilt is the main reason that I ordered the book.  I saw a story on Brigitte in a recent issue of Quiltmania magazine, and this quilt was pictured there.  This one is on my list of things that I'd like to do someday.
It's interesting that it doesn't have any binding.  The edges are just turned under and stitched. 

Her use of fabric is interesting.  I can see some Kaffe fabrics, but I also see some fabrics that I have in my stash that are brighter repros.

I love this photo.  Just look at these big hexagons used as a table cover.

This is Brigitte's version of the Sarah Johnson quilt.  It looks perfect on the bed in this photo.
