This is what is on my design wall this Monday morning. This is my version of the cover quilt from Easy Stash Quilts by Carol Doak. I believe the book came out in 1999, and so I probably made this quilt about then.
Now I'm trying to do this quilt in another colorway.
Then I found this piece of Paula Nadelstern Symmetry fabric in my stash, and I like the blocks much better with this focus fabric than with the original.
I had drawn an extra line in the paper piecing pattern above in the flying geese block before to try and add a touch of orange to help tie it all together. So I'm redoing those blocks to take out the orange so they look like the photo below.
Now I'm trying to do this quilt in another colorway.
I bought 2 yards of this focus fabric (below) last summer at a quilt show and began making the blocks based on that fabric. I stopped working on this last fall because I just didn't like how it looked but wasn't sure how I wanted to change it.
I had drawn an extra line in the paper piecing pattern above in the flying geese block before to try and add a touch of orange to help tie it all together. So I'm redoing those blocks to take out the orange so they look like the photo below.
As I was redoing that block, I got the idea to fussy cut one of the circles from the Symmetry fabric and put it in each of those pieces. Then I fussy cut one of the large circles and applique'd it over the center piece.
Much better, I think. I've also been auditioning outer border fabrics. I know I should wait until the blocks are finished and sewn together, but I think I have it narrowed down to this burgundy fossil fern.......
......or this green. I'm not sure yet, but I'm leaning toward the burgundy. Which do you like?
Thanks to Judy L. at Patchwork Times for hosting Design Wall Monday. You can go to her blog to see a list of links to what other quilters are working on.
I hope you are all finding some time to do a bit of stitching on this first full day of spring!!!! Thanks for stopping by for a visit.
This quilt will be sooo colourful. Love the rich texture. I think I prefer the burgundy finishing, because it looks warmer at the end :O)
ReplyDeleteGorgeous! I really love the colors of the fabric! I leaning towards burgundy.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely the red. It really shows up well and blends better with the patterned fabric. I love your color choices. The new center looks really nice too. You have a good eye for the details. Can't wait to see the finished product.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful...hmmm...I like both color ways, but the brite one is speaking to me this morning. Your piecing is so lovely!
ReplyDeleteIn stitches,
Teresa :o)
I like where you are headed with this. I like both the red and the green. Each brings out a different part of the block. I suppose it depends on what portion of the block you want to highlight. For me, you can never go wrong with red!
ReplyDeletelove the burgundy! It's going to be beautiful!
ReplyDeleteLove what you are doing with this quilt. I would go with the burgandy it has a warmness to it that keeps the quilt rich and vibrant.
ReplyDeleteI think this quilt will be absolutely stunning when finished.
ReplyDeleteI like them both but I like the red the best. I love the fussy cut in the middle too. I loved this fabric when it came out. I think I might still have a little of it in my stash too. Have fun!
ReplyDeleteLove that you've taken us through the process of building this quilt! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteBurgundy!!!
ReplyDeleteThe burgundy gets my vote.
ReplyDeleteI love the fussy cut center too.
I must say I vote with the burgundy! Beautiful quilts from the same pattern!
ReplyDeleteI love the original, but your new version is going to be something else again! I vote for the burgundy.
ReplyDeleteI, too, prefer the burgundy and I love your fabric change. I think thats one of the great things about quilting, you can continue to change your mind (ongoing creative process) until the quilt is quilted, or maybe until you start quilting. Anyway, love your new version.
ReplyDeleteGreat quilt, love all the bright colors. The bugundy adds that bit of sparkle and the contrast with the blue really works well.
ReplyDeleteWow LuAnn....looking so good..
ReplyDeleteThank you for your comment on my blog! What a nice quilt, with bright colours. I think burgundy best, too. Love yout hexies and plate!!!
ReplyDeleteHappy quilting, Cisca
